CHILDREN AGES 2 - 3 YEARS OLD

Welcome to the 2-3 year olds at The First Steps. This section will give you information about the curriculum for this age group and the way in which activities are organized. We hope you will find it useful.

Most of the children in this age group will have their third birthday during the academic year which starts on 29 th August. Part-time places usually three mornings per week are available.

We provide safe and secure teaching areas for these very young children with experienced teachers who understand their needs. Class size in this age group is kept small. There is a maximum of twelve children in each teaching group with a teacher, a class assistant and a nanny working in each class.

The school day is busy. Children are involved in a range of creative activities-painting, printing, collage, modeling, sewing and threading. There are plenty of opportunities for free and structured play, puzzles and games, role-play, rigorous outdoor activities and sand and water and play. The daily routine is important and during each morning there is snack time, a time for singing and for sharing books.

Being part of a group helps children to become aware of the needs of others and ways in which they can communicate, share equipment and space and the way in which each individual has a unique contribution to make.

Teachers plan the children’s learning around a topic and develop activities which provide opportunities to develop physical and manipulative skills, spatial and visual awareness, vocabulary and language skills and a sense of rhythm. A topic will normally last around half a term.
